“Bloggers don't deserve to be vilified”: YouTube star Tanya Burr defends the industry

She’s one of the world’s most successful YouTube stars, with millions of social media followers, two successful books and a bestselling makeup line under her belt.

So it’s no surprise that Tanya Burr is keen to defend the careers of her fellow bloggers and vloggers.

Speaking at Stylist Live about a recent Vogue article in which a fashion editor called bloggers “pathetic”, the fashion and beauty mogul said, “bloggers are creative and clever and have worked hard to get to where they are. They don’t deserve to be vilified.”

“It’s just jealousy,” she added. “Bloggers have just as much right to be on the front row as anyone else. They have as much, if not more, influence than others.”

Burr also charted her own journey as a YouTuber, describing how she started filming makeup tutorials seven years ago on the advice of her sisters-in-law, the beauty blogging duo Pixiwoo.

After realising that her videos were garnering thousands of views, and earning her thousands more subscribers, Burr left her part-time jobs working in Starbucks and Topshop to pursue her passion for makeup.

"Everyone around me was saying I should go for it and do my YouTube videos full time, but I was petrified," she said. "However, my channel grew so much over six weeks that I decided to quit and do it full time."

The 27-year-old, from Norwich, also shared her top tips for aspiring bloggers, vloggers and YouTubers.

"Be yourself and allow your personality to come into videos, as that's what makes us all unique and different," she advised. "Imagine you're talking to your audience as though they are your friends."

Burr also recommended budding YouTubers collaborate with those who have more followers than them, to get the ball rolling on growing their own audiences.

Dedication is also key, with Burr advising those starting out to, "keep consistently posting, and make sure you're really passionate about what you're talking about in your videos".

Sharing some of her hard-earned lessons from seven years in the blogging business, Burr also said she regretted occasionally oversharing when she first started out.

"I went through a phrase of over sharing on blogging and would probably take it back [if I could]," she said.

However, there's a silver lining to everything: "Doing that made me realise I don't like it," she added. "And I wouldn't know that if I hadn't done it."

Burr now keeps the details of her relationship with her husband, vlogger Jim Chapman, under wraps. "Our relationship is just for us," she said.

So what can Burr's millions of followers expect from her next?

"I want to get into acting," Burr said. "I think that would have more longevity [as a career] than YouTube."
