From Rothko’s reds to Hirst’s minimalism, art has long been beauty’s muse. To celebrate this, Stylist reinterprets four masterpieces using make-up

Styled By: Joanna McGarry And Samantha Flowers

Inspired by Jackson Pollock’s Number 8

Using one of the artist’s famous drip paintings as inspiration, we flecked a canvas with bold nail polishes.

  • Nail Colour in Blue Blue #4, £10.50, NailGirls
  • Nail Polish in Floral Street, £11, Nails Inc
  • Neon Brights Nail Polish in Tangerine Queen, £5, Model’s Own
  • 3 Free Nail Polish in Canary Yellow, £2.99, Maybelline

Inspired by Damien Hirst's Zinc Sulfate

To interpret Hirst’s famous spot painting, we used slices of nine of the new season’s most vivid lipsticks.

  • Rouge Automatique in 122, £22, Guerlain
  • Semi Matte Lipstick in Schiap, £17.50, Nars
  • True Colour Sheen in Mulberry, £4.99, Sleek
  • Lipstick in 115 and 101, £3.50, both Stargazer
  • Lipstick in Apocalips, £15.50, Illamasqua
  • Rouge Unlimited in 315, £19, Shu Uemura
  • Pure Colour Lipstick in 410, £13, CK One
  • Colour Fever Lipstick in 312, £19, Lancôme

Inspired by Henri Matisse's The Snail

Our version of this collage was created using crushed, intensely pigmented eyeshadow – a key trend for autumn.

  • Pressed Eye Shadow Refill in M Black 990, £11, Shu Uemura
  • Powder Eye Shadow in Fledgling, £15.50, Illamasqua
  • Eye Shadow in Rule, £12 and Eye Shadow in Winkle, £12, both Mac
  • Ombre Solo Lasting Radiance-Eyeshadow in No5, £21, YSL
  • Pan Am Eye Shadow in Warm Lilac, £14.50, 3 Custom Colour
  • Dazzle Dust in dd10, £4.59, Barry M
  • Matte Eyes in Painted, £6.50, Topshop
  • Pure Colour Gelée Powder Eyeshadow in Magenta, £19, Estée Lauder
  • Dazzle Dust in 77, £4.59, Barry M

Inspired by Mark Rothko's White Center

In homage to Rothko’s emotive use of colour, we made this artwork entirely from layers of cream blusher.

  • Blush in Prime Time, £6, Topshop
  • Cream Colour Base in Pearl, £14.50 and Cream Blush in Audacious Orange, £29, both YSL
  • Cream Blush in Crush, £16.50, Illamasqua
  • Photo Ready Cream Blush in Coral Reef, £5.99, Revlon
