How to paint winter nails

Every week, Stylist's beauty desk will be answering your beauty queries and concerns, from bad hair days to tanning troubles and beyond.

This week, Stylist's beauty assistant Anita Bhagwandas shares tips with a reader pondering over the right shades for nails this season...

If you have a beauty question you'd like our team to answer, simply email your query to beautyadvice@stylist.co.uk or tweet your question to @StylistMagazine using the hashtag #beautyadvice.

Reader Question:

Is it inappropriate to paint your nails a summer yellow during November? I need #BeautyAdvice

Stylist’s beauty assistant Anita Bhagwandas says:

As something of a beauty renegade I’m all for trailblazing summer colours in winter and vice versa, after all, rules were only ever made to be broken. Although a pastel yellow shades might look a little odd given that we’re deep into the season of dark hues and glittery polishes, give Topshop Nails in Cut the Mustard, £5, a whirl. It’s a sixties inspired dark yellow that cuts a sanguine figure without looking too summery.

Feeling bolder still? Perhaps try a feature nail, by painting one nail on each hand a darker colour, like a rich green or navy blue (not a bright blue or it’s the Ikea colours in their full glory.) If you’re something of a talon-nista (yes, I just said that), looking to make that bright yellow statement work for winter then Nars Nail Polish in Kismet with its fiery metallic yellow majesty is colour of choice.

But my question to you, is why limit yourself to yellow this season, as cheery as it might be? I’m enamoured with the new Orly Mineral FX collection, £9.85, particularly the jewelled sea-blue tones of Stone Cold, a bright statement shade that works for day and night. Cast aside the notions of propriety I say and take your nail colour choices to the next frontier.
