Every week, Stylist's beauty desk will be answering your beauty queries and concerns, from bad hair days to tanning troubles and beyond. This week, Stylist's beauty director Joanna McGarry helps a reader struggling with the effects of winter skin...

If you have a beauty question you'd like our team to answer, simply email your query to beautyadvice@stylist.co.uk or tweet your question to @StylistMagazine using the hashtag #beautyadvice.

Reader question:

My skin looks healthy and radiant during the summer, but as soon as the temperature drops and the central heating cranks up, my complexion turns into a oil-slick, what can I do to balance it out?

Answer from Stylist's beauty director Joanna McGarry:

I’m cut from the same cloth as you, and tend to spend my winters mopping up the excess oil that my skin produces with varying degrees of success. There are two elements to this problem; prevention and correction, and if you really want to make a difference, you’ll need to attack it from both sides. To help prevent excess sebum production, prime your skin before foundation with a product such as Darphin’s Skin Mat Matifying Lotion (£33.30) which works like a sponge to soak up excess oil and keeps skin in check throughout the day. Follow this up with an oil-free foundation so not to exacerbate the problem further. Bobbi Brown Oil-Free Even Finish Foundation SPF15 (£29) is my own personal saviour. And for all those unavoidable chip-pan moments, keep a little pack of blotting paper on your desk or in your bag. They mop up excess moisture without the drying effects of constant powdering. My current favourites are Kleenex Shine Absorbing Sheets Powder Free (£2.99). And remember, a little bit of shine (on the forehead, cheekbones and bridge of the nose) is far more modern – and youthful looking – than a supremely matte complexion, the catwalk has spoken.
