A health spa where you’re bathed in beer and stung by bees might not sound especially relaxing, but that’s what you get at the Medobory Sanatorium in western Ukraine.
The unorthodox, post-Soviet spa claims bathing in beer helps the kidneys, aids digestion and rejuvenates skin. Bee stings, meanwhile, stimulate the nervous system, ease joint pain and boost the immune system.
Dr Richard Styles, medical director of the American Medical Center in Kiev, said former eastern bloc countries are known for home cures and unconventional remedies, adding: “We recognise not all medicine is evidence based. Some of it is anecdotal, but that doesn’t mean it’s wrong.”
