Magical hair dye changes colour according to temperature and mood

Any nineties teenager worth their salt will remember the joy of having a mood ring, and the magic of watching the stone change colour according to whether they were happy, in a bad mood, or – whisper it – in love.

Now the mythical allure of mood rings has resurfaced for grown ups, with a new hair dye that promises to transform your hair into different colours depending on your mood.

The dye was invented by occultist and Unseen founder Lauren Bowker, who developed a technology that works in a similar way to mood rings to change colour according to the temperature.

Aptly named Fire, the dyes react to air and body temperature to change colour, such as transforming from black to red as it gets hotter (below) and blonde to blue as it gets colder.

Just realised the earlier video of this was cut short! It actually goes so here it is again! #seetheunseen #magick #alchemy

Brilliantly, the dye’s invention was inspired by a classic scene from the cult nineties film The Craft, in which a character’s hair was magically transformed from brunette to blonde.

Taking to Instagram to share videos of colour-changing hair, Bowker wrote, “An idea is only an idea until someone makes it happen!

“Six months ago [a friend] and I were watching The Craft and It dawned on me that their world was now! If you can believe it you will see it! And why wouldn't you!?”

Bowker launched the dye earlier this week at London Fashion Week, and revealed to Dazed that she had developed the formula by simply “messing about in the lab”.

“I have always been into the occults and into mixing stuff,” she added.

“Even as a kid I used to mix bath potions, and was really hands-on with the stuff I had around me, making new products out of them, without even knowing I was doing it.”

The seven dyes aren’t currently available to buy, but Bowker is hoping a future partnership with a beauty brand will change this.

And if it does, we definitely predict a sell out...
