Natural beauty begone: why Dolly Parton is your new beauty muse

dolly beauty fashion week.jpg

Dolly Parton: the woman who brought us some of the most empowering ballads of all time (anyone else listen to 9-5 every morning on repeat?)

We can't get enough of the queen of country music.

But, love her though we do, Dolly's iconic big-haired, preened and polished look is an unexpected choice for beauty inspiration in 2016.

Having spent the last decade trying to perfect a seemingly effortless and natural beauty look, Dolly's aesthetic seems like the antithesis of our aims.

Not anymore. Backstage at New York Fashion Week, the city's most boundary-pushing designer, Jeremy Scott, was making a pretty firm case as to why we should keep Dolly at the forefront of our minds when getting ready in the morning.

In one corner of the backstage space, make-up artist, Kabuki, was hard at work taking country western out of this world. “This season, we’re creating pin-up cowgirls travelling through outer space,” he mused.

In make-up terms, that meant a custom-mixed neon stripe in the creases of the eyes, contrasted with a strong neon pink lip (MAC's Candy Yum Yum lipstick) and finished with a star-shaped sequin pinned like a beauty mark on the models’ cheeks.

For hair, Eugene was going big. “Big, big, big, big, bigger than big, big, big,” he emphasised.

Huge rollers left the models hair so big and bouncy, Ms Parton herself would be proud.

Why not try the look yourself with some of the year's best beauty products.
