Stylist's Associate Editor, Beauty, Joanna McGarry gives her verdict on the 10 biggest beauty highlights from last night's Academy Awards.

SIENNA MILLER

I applaud any actress that’s bold enough to wear her hair completely off her face on the red carpet. We don’t see enough of that. It far more timeless and elegant than over-preened waves. And that feline eye, by the expert hand of Charlotte Tilbury is pretty magnificent too.

Sienna Miller

SCARLETT JOHANSSON

Ok, admittedly, I’m still getting used to Scarlett’s shaved hairdo, but I’ll put my reservations aside to appreciate her perfectly nuanced skin and aquamarine eyes. This woman has just had a baby and yet her sleeplessness is not remotely detectable. Incredible.

Scarlett Johansson

DIANE KRUGER

Nobody does elegant, ethereal beauty better than Diane. Combining a striking red lip with this classic swept back updo, Diane knows that just a subtle make-up finish around these two classic looks will let them do the work.

Kate Bosworth

KERRY WASHINGTON

Utterly radiant skin like this is not merely the product of the finest skincare money can buy, it’s evidence of a life lived well. And the brush-up on those brows is a work of art in itself. An old, dry toothbrush spritzed with hairspray and they can be yours too.

Kerry Washington

NATALIE PORTMAN

My favourite hair style of the entire night. A bit Jackie O, a bit Elizabeth Taylor, Portman is staging a one-person battle-cry for the return of proper, elaborate, tricky-to-do-yourself hair styles and I am  all for it.

Natalie Portman

REESE WITHERSPOON

I like to think that this sort of bronze, fragrant glow is the product of lots of tiny little airbrushing guns that took their aim in a hotel suite in the hours before the event. When, in reality, Reece’s ethereal glow is more than likely the product of good genes and a lot of rosewater spritzing in the limo.

Reese Witherspoon

JENNIFER LOPEZ

The woman is 45. 45! Proving that women do indeed get better with age, JLo is still having fun with her look, not fading into beauty mediocrity. The Barbie pink lip – perfect against her Latina skin – and the taupe smokey eye are playful yet regal. And her power pony is the perfect jumping-off point for that.

Jennifer Lopez

EMMA STONE

Her hair a deep, Rita Hayworth hue, her lips, as red as a fire truck, Emma Stone nails it again with a beauty look that could really only work on someone characterful enough to carry it off. I’m not the biggest fan of the one-sided hairdo, but she wears it with such aplomb that I’m sort of coming around…

Emma Stone

LUPITA NYONG'O

You always get the feeling with Lupita that she adores the whole ritual of beauty; the colours, the transformative element, the notion of play. And already, we’ve come to rely on her for a decadent - as opposed to discreet – look on the red carpet. Here, she dazzles with a pewter grey eye, teamed with a merlot lip; a pairing that could have easily come across as a little heavy-handed, but she manages to infuse a sense of effortlessness into via her mega-watt smile.

Lupita

KEIRA KNIGHTLEY

Somehow, she always manages to look like a Shakespearean goddess. Tonight, we have Tatiana of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, complete with rose-budded mauve lips and tawny accents around her eyes. A face like Knightley’s needs very little in cosmetic jiggery-pokery and she knows it. It’s a shame she decided to play it so safe with her hair, with atypical LA waves.
