Chanel's make-up ambassador Kay Montano showcases winter's most dramatic and beautiful make-up looks for the party season.

The Golden Hour

All that glistens may not be gold, but there’s a fine line between an effervescent glow and a glitter bath. “The lack of foundation makes this look modern,” says make-up artist and Chanel ambassador Kay Montano. “Glitter should have an ethereal quality that’s fresh-faced rather than disco-inspired.”

Le Blanc De Chanel Sheer Illuminating Base, £30, Illusion D’Ombre Long-Wear Luminous Eyeshadow in Vision, £23, Illusion D’Ombre Long-Wear Luminous Eyeshadow in Abstraction, £23, Crayon Sourcils Eyebrow Pencil in Brun Naturel, £19, and Lèvres Scintillantes Glossimer Lipgloss in Allégorie, £21, all Chanel Headband, £170, Sophie McElligott

The Celestial Gaze

Rules are made to be broken and party season is the ultimate time to expand your beauty universe: “A softly lit silver eye paired with a deep lip has something of a cosmic debutante feel to it,” Montano explains. “The key is using extra foundation to ensure the skin is flawless and radiant, and to use a slightly darker shade in the eye socket and underneath the cheekbones for definition.”

Perfection Lumière Long-Wear Flawless Fluid Make-Up SP10 in 10 Beige, £36, Ombre Contraste Sculpting Veil For Eyes And Cheeks in Notorious, £31, and Illusion D’Ombre Long-Wear Luminous Eyeshadow in Fantasme, £23, all Chanel; Mascara Noir G de Guerlain, £35, Guerlain; Anti-Feathering Lip Pencil in Very Cherry, £16.50, Laura Mercier; Super Lustrous Lipstick, £7.49, Revlon Lone Star earrings, £1,900, Solange Azagury-Partridge; necklace, price on application, Fabergé

Cosmic Royalty

As the night falls, it’s time to transform into your alter ego. Montano’s muse is a grown-up rock princess defined entirely by her own wilful spirit: “I based this look on an early Courtney Love, with a bold red lip and a smoky brown eye achieved using brown cream shadow underneath the eye, rather than eyeliner. It blends to a softer finish that’s almost Elizabethan.”

Vitalumière Satin Smoothing Fluid Make-Up SPF15 in Limpid, £34, Stylo Yeux Waterproof Eyeliner in Noir Intense, £19, and Sublime De Mascara in 10, £23, all Chanel; Joli Rouge Appeal Lipstick in Cedar Red, £17, Clarins; Flesh Tone Lip Pencil in Red, £19, Kevyn Aucoin; Creaseless Cream Eyeshadow/Liner in Busy Signal, £14, Benefit Tiara, £1,900, Solange Azagury-Partridge; Belle Époque earrings, £4,850, and Snap, Crackle and Pop ring set, £4,300, both Stephen Webster

Unto the Stars

For the ultimate night-time look go for a modern vintage feel (along the lines of a flawless Elizabeth Taylor). The key to keeping it fashion-forward is all in the details, Montano explains. “The brows are wide-set, but not too dark. The lower lashes are drawn on precisely with liquid liner, and the face is gently contoured under the cheekbones and hairline. The extra dash of glitter in a clear gloss is entirely optional, though,” she says. Now, to find a party.

Poudre Universelle Libre in Translucent, £34, Ombre Contraste Sculpting Veil For Eyes And Cheeks in Notorious, £31, and Écriture De Chanel Automatic Liquid Eyeliner, £25, all Chanel; Long-Wear Even Finish Foundation SPF15 in Warm Ivory, £30, Bobbi Brown; High Impact Extreme Volume Mascara in Extreme Black, £17, Clinique; Loose Glitter, £6.50, Fardel Blouse, £2,398, Corrie Nielsen; hairband, stylist’s own; earrings, £6,890, Natasha Zinko
