The eight truths of healthy hair - gallery

Have you ever tried out your friend’s hair products in the hope that you can replicate their silky locks, only to be disappointed with the result? Your hair, much like your skin, is unique to you, so what works for your mate might not necessarily be right for you.

Working out what products really make your hair look and feel amazing can be a process of trial and error, but – lucky for you (and your friends’ diminishing supply of hair products) – it doesn’t have to be. Wella’s System Professional range rather cleverly works to make the most of your hair, whether it’s curly, straight, dry, damaged or a combination of all those.

System Professional’s EnergyCode Speed Mapping tool helps you discover exactly what combination of products is going to be best for your hair. Simply answer a few questions about your hair and scalp and you’ll be given a code, which relates to specific products in the System Professional range. Clever, huh?

We hosted a talk at Wella World Studio, hosted by our Beauty Director at Large Joanna McGarry and Wella Spokesperson Sophie Ruggiero, about how we should approach hair care with eight pearls of wisdom in mind. Find the tips below, along with our image gallery from the evening.

IT’S NOT HOW OFTEN YOU WASH IT, BUT HOW YOU WASH IT THAT COUNTS

This can be dependent on hair length or colour. Always be gentle when washing your hair and remember that over-washing can strip your hair and scalp of natural oils, which we need to keep our hair looking and feeling its best. When rinsing, use lukewarm to cold water to help close the hair’s cuticle, keeping in the nourishment of your conditioner.

APPLICATION IS EVERYTHING

How much you apply, how thoroughly and how gently you apply your shampoo and conditioner can directly impact the quality of your hair. Ask your hairstylist for advice on how best to wash yours to give it the love it deserves.

HEAT IS THE ENEMY OF BEAUTIFUL HAIR

We know heat irrevocably damages the hair shaft, but research shows that heat protectants are the most overlooked part of the hair-care armoury. Protecting your hair against the heat of straighteners and blow-drying is key to keeping it in the best health it can be.

YOUR HAIR IS A REFLECTION OF YOUR LIFESTYLE

Diet, stress and our sleeping patterns have a powerful influence over our physical health and the quality of our skin. But our hair is also a clear indicator of what is going on inside. Incorporate hair-loving superfoods and supplements into your diet and your hair will love your for it.

SMART BRUSHING CAN MAKE OR BREAK YOUR HAIR

Water breaks down the natural hydrogen bonds in hair, making it more prone to breakage. It's also the time in which we spend the longest brushing it, so it pays to invest in a soft, cushiony brush that cups the scalp and slides through the hair. To minimise damage, brush the hair from the mid-lengths down before brushing from the roots.

SUN-KISSED HAIR IS DAMAGED HAIR

We may all adore the natural hair-lightening effects of the sun, but any shift in colour or texture means a chemical process has taken place – in other words, it's a sign of damage. Treat your hair as you would your skin; apply a UV protectant before extended periods of sun exposure and you'll maintain its health long into your holiday.

THE SCALP IS THE KEY TO UNLOCKING YOUR HAIR POTENTIAL

A happy, healthy scalp means healthy, beautiful hair. If you suffer with excessively oily hair, or dry hair with flaking, take this as proof that your hair is in need of expert attention. Ask your hairstylist to take a close look at your scalp and recommend a programme of hair care.

HEALTHY HAIR IS CREATED BY HEALTHY HAIR HABITS

Over half of women apply five different skincare products to their face each morning, yet we're still unlikely to extend the same level of care to our hair. Through the clear understanding of your hair type and concerns – by way of the System Professional EnergyCodeä – we can begin to finally get on better terms with our hair, as we are with our skin.
