We all have that one friend or family member who is infuriatingly impossible to buy for: the one who has us scouring the “quirky” gift guide ideas relentlessly each Christmas before sheepishly plumping for a gift voucher.

But sometimes with present-buying it’s best to think quite literally outside of the box, and surprise your recipient with something they would never expect to receive.

As strange as it might sound, giving the gift of a tattoo is downright common in some places, with the list of the top 10 cities in the world where tattoos are most likely to be given as a gift even including two areas right here in the UK.

The list, compiled by video retail app YEAY, surveyed hundreds of tattoo parlours in 100 cities across the world to produce a Global Tattoo Trend Index.

The study found that Tahiti in French Polynesia and Auckland in New Zealand were the most popular cities for tattoo gifting, with 60% of tattoos in each city being inked as a gift. Of these, 10% were given as a gift by a parent to their child, while 40% and 43% respectively were given as a present from a partner.

Glasgow came a close third, with 40% of tattoos in the city being given as gifts.
