How to: Pink eyeshadow trend tutorial

Stylist's Beauty Director Joanna McGarry tests out the pink and red-hued eyeshadow trend, as seen at in the spring/summer catwalks at John Galliano and Dries Van Noten. But would you wear it? Watch her in the how-to video tutorial and decide for yourself.

Smearing your eyelids with a medley of warm pinks, raspberry tones and pillar box-red eyeshadow is easily the most counterintuitive approach to make-up in recent memory. Not least when said eyelids are already a bit pink, swollen and hayfever-ravaged. Who needs to look even more incapable of inhaling the slightest particle of birch bark in the air than they already do? Not I. And yet that’s what the spring/ summer catwalk has decreed for the bravest of beauty early adopters.

At John Galliano, a deep-pink tone was pushed into the socket line over a neutral base, against fresh demi-matte skin, while at Dries van Noten, the palest of (non-shimmery) pink was lightly draped across the eyelid, giving a slightly princessy, innocent feel. Daring though it seems, this is not the first time we’ve seen red eyeshadow on the catwalk. It’s popped up several times in recent years and each time it’s been quickly dismissed as madness with a sponge applicator.

Except… well, the models in said shows look remarkably healthy, not at all like they’ve fallen foul of mid-season pollen, been crying for hours, or indeed, have a tropical eye disease. They appear disarmingly fresh. Done well, even the most extreme of looks can be beautiful. In my own rudimentary attempt, I worked two pink tones into my socket line, finishing with a touch of mascara.

The result? I don’t hate it. In fact, I left it on for the rest of the day, buoyed by a comment about my blue eyes looking ‘bluer’. But what do you think? Watch my how-to video and decide for yourself. And remember: Fortune favours the brave.
