Trend On Trial: big hair

Be a modern day Barbarella with big hair (as seen at Julien Macdonald's S/S 2011 show), says Stylist's Beauty Director Joanna McGarry...

BIG hair is the pinnacle of glamour. And right now, hardly a week goes by when we don’t see some of the world’s most famous women (Cheryl Cole, SJP) sporting a huge helmet of hair. It’s never far away from the catwalk either – Julien MacDonald and Giles Deacon both pledged allegiance to the uplifting effects of high hair this season. Still, it’s a look British women have been faithful to for years – it’s practically a national sport. Though it is worth remembering that the higher you go, the more inches you compromise on length. My shoulder-length cut became a square, Lego-head bob when I attempted it.

And it’ll take you at least half an hour to get it standing virtually upright. I plied my damp hair with mousse before blow-drying with a large barrel brush, tonging large sections, and backcombing using a fine-tooth comb – spraying with Bumble & Bumble Does It All Styling Spray, to give it texture. I then finished the look with lashings of hairspray. Red-carpet starlet? I felt more like the notoriously big-haired First Lady of Cameroon, Chantal Biya, which is when I realised that there’s only one way to do BIG hair, and that’s by assuming your own red-carpet look; towering heels, a killer dress and buckets of attitude.
