Trend On Trial: rich metallics

Go for the golden touch as seen on the Rodarte S/S 2011 catwalk, says Stylists's beauty director Joanna McGarry.

It’s around this time of year that – along with simple summer sandals and colourful tote bags – we’re encouraged to invest in a sea of rich, metallic make-up.

Most of us are happy to inject a little exotic glamour into our standard eye make-up look. But who in their right mind would take the relatively safe sanctuary of metallics to the lips? Well, Rodarte would – and to surprisingly beautiful effect. The models at their s/s 2011 catwalk show were in the grip of gold mania; bronze lips, lemon-gold skin, all finished with spidery gold false lashes.

The resultant look, was somewhere between Ziggy Stardust and Princess Leia, which sounds utterly wrong, but actually worked.

For my own attempt, I began with a swipe of Dolce & Gabbana’s Shine Lipstick in Gold, intensified it with a spot of Illamasqua Liquid Metal in Enrapture, and spent 10 minutes wrestling with Shu Uemura’s Twisted Space False Eyelashes, which were far more subtle than they first appeared. To bind the look together, I daubed Mac’s Cream Colour Base in Pearl, £13.50, onto my cheekbones.

With all three gold elements fighting for attention on my face, I felt overdone. So I whipped off the false lashes and felt a lot calmer with just a hint of the Midas touch on the lips.
