There's now going to be a Good Sex in Fiction award

Since 1993, Literary Review’s Bad Sex in Fiction Award has been recognising the authors producing “outstandingly bad” sex scenes, highlighting the awkward, hilarious and occasionally downright nonsensical passages of passion in “otherwise good” novels.

Now another publication has decided to counter the award with one of its own, celebrating the best sex writing to combat the sniggers about erotic literature, and show that sex in fiction can be done well.

As thetimes.co.uk reports, Lisa Moylett, publisher of Erotic Review, said the magazine is “throwing down the gauntlet”.

Speaking at The Times Cheltenham Literature Festival, Moylett said: “We have laughed enough.

“No more ‘bad sex’ writing. That is not something we should be celebrating.”

While the Bad Sex in Fiction Award states on its website that its aim is to “draw attention to poorly written, perfunctory or redundant passages of sexual description in modern fiction, and to discourage them”, the new award is intended to encourage writers who might be worried to express themselves.

Moylett appeared alongside Mariella Frostrup, who referenced the recent boom in erotic literature (need we mention Fifty Shades?) and who pointed out that children now have access to more online than generations before them, linking it to the need to be generally more open about sex, rather than getting all Joey Tribbiani about it.

Frostrup, who curated the recently released collection Desire: 100 of Literature’s Sexiest Stories, said: “There are some very serious issues about pornography and the way we can access it. We need to man up about sex and start talking about it more openly. “

She added: “Rather than rummaging through their parents’ books to find mention of anything even vaguely reflecting the fires they start to feel burning, they’re given a full frontal view from day one.”

Last year’s Bad Sex in Fiction Award went to Morrissey for a passage in his novel List of the Lost.
