Our Eighties and Nineties binge continues with news to warm the cockles of your high school heart: a Sweet Valley High film is coming.

And not only that, but there’s an excellent team behind it – with the writer of Legally Blonde on board to bring it to the screen.

Kirsten Smith is well versed in teen drama, having written 1999’s 10 Things I Hate About You as well as the 2001 modern comedy classic, and will be co-writing the Paramount Pictures project with Harper Dill (of TV series The Mick), according to deadline.com.

The Sweet Valley book series, created by Francine Pascal, told the story of twins Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield who live in Sweet Valley (duh), California, and it debuted in 1983. Much loved, it went on for 20 years, spawning hundreds of books in various spin-off series, including Sweet Valley Twins and Sweet Valley University, as well as a few more recent stories following the twins into adulthood.

The TV show ran from 1994 to 1997, and starred Brittany and Cynthia Daniel as the all-American twins. There’s no news yet on whether Pascal will be involved in the film adaptation.

Yep, vampires and werewolves have ruled young adult fiction for too long. It's time for some good old-fashioned teen angst based on the conveniently clashing personalities of identical twin sisters. Although we won’t be too sad if the whole blonde-blue-eyed-perfect-tan image is dropped tbh.
