The unusual wedding dress trend brides-to-be can’t get enough of

unusual off shoulder cream wedding dress.jpg

On the hunt for a wedding dress less, well, wedding dressy?

Given that more and more happy couples are eschewing the traditional aspects of getting married (mismatched bridesmaids, themed wedding breakfasts, stylish non-white cakes et al), it follows that more brides-to-be are in search of striking, unusual gowns.

And they’re in luck: there’s an increasing trend for one particular fashion-forward style for 2017 and 2018 weddings, so if you or someone you know is looking for a beautifully different wedding dress, let us introduce the rising star of bridal fashion.

Image-sharing website (and best friend to wedding parties everywhere) Pinterest has seen a surge in pins of off-the-shoulder wedding dress designs – a 158% increase, in fact.

While strapless gowns have been popular for a long time, the off-shoulder look is a Bardot-style slashed neckline with sleeves, either long or short.

The example above is from a 2015 collection by NY label Houghton, so you’ll have difficulty getting your hands on the exact design, but there are several eye-catching numbers currently available elsewhere.

The below, from ASOS Bridal, is beautifully chic with puff sleeves, tie detail and a wrap-over skirt – and incredibly budget-friendly, at £120.

Self-Portrait’s ivory lace-trimmed satin gown comes in at £550 on Net-a-Porter, and makes a feature of the embellished neckline-slash-short sleeves, as well as adding a high-low hemline for showing off your bridal footwear.

Slightly pricier at £1,155 is this paper-white Sies Marjan midi dress, which updates the slash neck with two feature straps, and long fluted sleeves.

Meanwhile, a £250 lace-detail Debut dress is a somewhat more traditional way to try the trend, with a fun and slightly retro tea dress shape.

There’s tonnes more off-shoulder wedding dress inspiration on Pinterest, so print yourself a folder to take along to your next bridal boutique appointment, and check out our gallery of 18 unusual wedding dresses for beautifully bold brides here.

Of course, more pins might eventually translate to the style being less unusual, but in the rather slow, mega-trad world of weddings, having a tower of cheese instead of a three-tiered fruit cake with royal icing is still seen as ‘out there’ so we wouldn’t worry too much.
