These are the most exciting names in Britain's fashion

fashion-talent.jpg

The great and the good of the fashion industry gathered in London last night to honour established and emerging talent at the 2016 Fashion Awards. Stylist fashion director Alexandra Fullerton was there in the thick of it and gives her verdict on the headline winners, on an evening of high-octane glamour.

Last night the fashion industry celebrated its biggest night of the year.

Forget New York's Met Ball, the Fashion Awards, held at The Royal Albert Hall, played host to almost 4,000 of the biggest names in fashion including Kate Moss, Anna Wintour and Donatella Versace and celebrated creativity and commerce in fashion with an array of fiercely sought-after awards.

The red carpet was sprinkled with glitter and inside elegant blush pink velvet banquettes saw Marilyn Manson, Jared Leto and Alexa Chung cosying up to a three-course meal that included venison carpaccio, shredded Hispi cabbage salad, polenta chips and mini mince pies.

Previously named The British Fashion Awards, it was decided to drop the British tag to celebrate more international names - and engage with a global audience. With so many stellar names from around the world in attendance, it definitely worked.

London-born womanswear designer Molly Goddard took home one of the most coveted awards of the night – that of Emerging British Talent.

A Central Saint Martins graduate, Goddard is a breath of fresh air. She's only been around for a few seasons but her unique use of tulle and ultra feminine silhouettes are fun, pretty and unusual in fashion, where there has been so much focus on looking tough and cool recently.

Fellow Londoner Adwoa Aboah, International Model nominee, showcased one of Goddard’s party dresses at the awards last night (below), giving it edge with her choice of chunky gold jewellery.

When Simone Rocha was named British Womenswear Designer, screams of joy erupted among her family and friends. In a happy twist of fate, her father John Rocha won the exact same award 23 years ago.

The accolade couldn’t be more deserved; Rocha has been quietly and steadfastly been building her business to industry acclaim, while still being commercial and sellable around the world, a rare feat.

The title of Best British Brand went to Alexander McQueen. Once helmed by the eponymous designer, who died in 2010, and now led by creative director Sarah Burton, the house of Alexander McQueen manages to encapsulate British fashion motifs (their spring show was inspired by the Shetland Isles) to international acclaim.

The International Urban Luxury Brand was a brand new category this year, created to celebrate the influence of the street on the catwalk – an achievement that went to Paris-based Vetements. Vetements’ clever appropriation of casual elements - like the hoodie - have earned it high fashion status. The label is a collective, led by brothers Demna and Guram.

And the title of International Accessories Designer went to Alessandro Michele for Gucci. Under Michele's creative direction, Gucci has risen to become the fashion world's most wanted label and its accessories - from the Disco bag to the glittery stack heel Marmont loafers and bedazzling costume jewellery – are wait list worthy pieces.
