An Alexander McQueen film is in the pipeline

A biopic about legendary British designer, Alexander McQueen, is in the works.

According to Deadline Hollywood, who broke the news, the film will be directed by Andrew Haigh. Haigh's film, 45 Years, has been nominated for a best actress award at this year’s Oscars, for Charlotte Rampling’s role.

The film will be produced by Damian Jones (The Iron Lady) and the script will be penned by Playwright, Chris Urch – based on Andrew Wilson’s biography of the late designer, Alexander McQueen: Blood Beneath the Skin.

The news comes after the astonishing success of the Savage Beauty exhibition – a retrospective of McQueen’s designs at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art that came to London’s Victoria and Albert Museum in 2015, attracting close to 500.000 visitors.

Last year also saw the play, McQueen, about the designer’s imaginary muse, open at London’s St James’ theatre.

One of the most renowned designers in British history, east London born Lee Alexander McQueen was the son of a cab driver, and started his career as an apprentice on Savile Row, where he learned the tailoring skills that would play such a pivotal role in his later designs.

He went on to enrol on the prestigious fashion design MA at Central Saint Martins, and launched his eponymous line in 1992, deciding – on the direction of his friend, Isabella Blow – to use his middle name.

In 1996 McQueen became Creative Director of French couture house, Givenchy – a post which he held until 1996.

McQueen was known for his ground-breaking designs that combined classic tailoring and heritage fabrics with deconstruction techniques and punk influence. His garments were expertly constructed and deeply romantic at times, and he dressed iconic figures including David Bowie, Daphne Guinness, Isabella Blow – and even Prince Charles.

The designer was as famous for his catwalk shows as for his collections, creating spectacular theatrical presentations on the runway including his infamous ‘Highland Rape’ show of 1995.

McQueen committed suicide in his London home on 11 February 2010, aged 40, only a few days after the death of his mother, with whom he was incredibly close.

According to Deadline Hollywood, producers hope to begin production for the film at the end of the year. Casting details have yet to be announced.
