Insta star Baddie Winkle talks to Stylist: “My motto? Praying for the basics”

Interview: Tom Gormer

Baddie Winkle is the internet’s favourite great-grandma, an octogenarian Instagram star with millions of followers and an eye for fashion – so adored that she’s modelled for Missguided, has been a muse for a make-up brand and counts celebrities among her fans (many of whom will no doubt be investing in her upcoming book Baddiewinkle’s Guide To Life).

With help from her great-granddaughter, the 88-year-old posts a constant stream of pictures of herself in knock-out, often multicoloured ensembles, complete with spiky captions full of emojis.

And, speaking to Stylist, she says she’s always experimented with her style.

“Sometimes I’d change the way something looked, try a different way, kind of improvise. Feel a bit on the wild side!” she explains. “I’ll take a lot of risks.

“Some people don’t agree with me, but that’s fine.”

Asked if negative comments ever upset her, she tells us: “It used to, but now it just rolls off my back and I say, ‘You know, you live your life, I’ll live mine’.”

She adds: “I think it’s very important to stay young at heart.

“I have friends who are the same age, and then I have friends who are younger, like in their 70s, and they don’t get out and do the stuff that I do.”

Winkle, born in 1928, says her nose for fashion actually used to get her in trouble in school (we’d be interested to know what they make of her PVC-clad, spliff-toting snaps of recent months).

“The principle had me in her office when my dress was too short,” she laughs. “I was 16. I mean, the short dresses just came out!”

But these days, she’s got a message for anyone who thinks her wardrobe should be limited.

Asked if she has a motto she lives by, her reply is straightforward: “Praying for the basics. That means when somebody says bad things about me – which they do – I pray for them.”
