'How can they be fashion icons if they’re not wearing anything?' Carolina Herrera's controversial comments on the naked dress trend

See-through dresses, nearly-naked gowns, call them what you will, the A-list have always had a love affair with sheer clothing.

But one fashion icon has spoken out about not being happy with it, after stars from Beyonce to Jennifer Lopez increasingly hit the red carpet in revealing outfits.

Veteran designer Carolina Herrera - who has dressed the likes of Princess Diana, Jacqueline Onassis and Michelle Obama - says the A-listers should cover up.

Speaking to The Washington Post, Herrera said, "Some designers think it’s so modern to be naked or almost naked. They think it’s going to attract younger people if they do those dresses. No!”

“The almost naked! Oh God! They’re trying to get people to pay attention to them. In life, there should be a little mystery.”

Referring to the dresses worn by Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian at the Met Ball in May, Herrera said, “They’re supposed to be fashion icons and they’re not wearing anything. It’s an obsession now.”

The 76-year-old designer says the secret to perfect style lies in strategically revealing parts that flatters the body. She is more than willing to give her customers a plunging neckline, but doing so requires care and a precise placement of the breasts underneath the fabric.

"If it's open so much, they look like fried eggs," Herrera added. "Fashion is about proportion."

Herrera's eponymous brand launched in 1981 after legendary Harper's Bazaar and Vogue editor Diana Vreeland urged her to join the fashion industry.
