British Fashion Awards winners

The great and the good of the international fashion crowd descended on Savoy hotel last night for the British Fashion Awards 2011, with Stylist in attendance amid all the sartorial glamour.

Victoria Beckham rubbed shoulders with the likes of Kate Moss, Kate Hudson and Alexa Chung for the awards dinner in the Savoy's baby blue-shaded ballroom - also the location of the Maria Grachvogel and Erdem SS12 shows earlier this year.

Alexa, who later scooped the public-voted British style award for the second year running, turned heads in a pastel and crystal design from Christopher Kane's spring collection. She dedicated her award to "girls who dress like awkward boys."

Dressed in a black halter-neck gown, Victoria Beckham was choked with emotion as she picked up the designer brand award in recognition of her fashion line's massive commercial success over the past year. It is the first time she has been officially recognised by the British fashion industry.

"Sorry, I'm being so rubbish," the former Spice Girl told the audience several times, after accepting the award from her close friend Marc Jacobs.

Most of the winners were given their awards by long-time friends and acquaintances, adding a touching feel to the ceremony.

Kate Hudson took time to read a personal message off her iPhone about Stella McCartney, before honouring the designer with the red carpet award celebrating the quantity and quality of her creations worn in the public eye.

Kate recalled how she was voted worst-dressed for the 20o1 Oscars after wearing one of Stella's designs - to which Stella retorted that there must have been something wrong with her hair.

The covetable designer of the year award went to Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, after a triumphant 12 months that saw Kate Middleton showcase her intricate wedding dress design to a global audience of millions during April's royal wedding.

Samantha Cameron presented the award to Sarah, who was later spotted smiling and chatting to a crowd of admirers outside the hotel.

Stylist's fashion director Alexandra Fullerton said the award was fully deserved: "What Sarah Burton has done is make the McQueen label her own, translating it to mass appeal through her work with Kate Middleton, while she has still retained the heritage of Lee's work."

Alex was also delighted to see Christopher Kane win the new establishment award at last night's ceremony. "It's time we had something that recognises these newer labels," she said. "Neither old school nor fresh out of college, the new establishment award (introduced this year) celebrates the essence of the British fashion industry. Brands like Erdem, Jonathan Saunders and Christopher Kane create a huge buzz during London Fashion Week - they are why the global press comes to the city - and their innovative collections, which are mixed with commercial polish have made the UK a serious destination once again."

Elsewhere, Mary Katrantzou made a long and touching speech thanking everyone she knew as she picked up the emerging talent ready-to-wear award for her bold graphic print collections.

Paul Smith was unable to attend the ceremony as it was his wife Pauline's birthday. Instead, he made a video that showed him cycling around his office that was played after he was announced winner of the BFC outstanding achievement in fashion award.

And Poppy Delevigne and Olivia Palermo both opted for Matthew Williamson designs as they handed out awards, making him the go-to choice for the evening's presenters.
