Candy Shop

It’s practically the law in fashion land that what Miuccia Prada says, goes. So if she decrees this Spring to be sweet, then sweet it shall be. As it goes, you don’t get much sweeter than the sugary shade parade that was the new season catwalks, with everyone from Chanel to Missoni working in a delectable, powdery palette of iced mint, lilac and candyfloss pink.

The Meadham Kirchhoff boys lead the way in London, sending out a collection that was a cross between a 5 year old’s birthday party and Courtney Love circa Hole. Dishevelled pastel wigs, smiley-face pinafores and platforms that were akin to Disney wedding cakes made for a cheeky take on the trend. Much less kitsch was 3.1 Phillip Lim’s slick approach – languid silhouettes and a sporty feel banished any assumptions that pastels are the sole domain of the ultra-girly. Infused with a grown-up allure, his was a masterclass in making pastels cool. Somewhere in the middle sat Prada and Louis Vuitton, who both chose to straddle the cutesy/ contemporary divide.

Marc Jacobs added edge to his sherbert-toned 50s frocks with pin-sharp metallic heels and matte crocodile biker jackets. And Ms Prada? She turned pretty on its head by printing black flames on an otherwise prissy pink dress, and splicing her looks with eye-popping brights. Take your style cue from this and mix in vibrant flashes of colour to make the trend more palatable. Alternatively, stick to clean, linear cuts for a contemporary take. What better way to ensure you don’t OD on sugar?
