First glimpse inside Coco Chanel's famous home

As well as bringing Fifty Shades of Grey to the big screen, Sam Taylor-Johnson is about to give us an insight into the life of the iconic - and secretive - Coco Chanel.

Photographer and director Taylor-Johnson was given rare access to the late fashion designer's private Rue Cambon apartment to take pictures for a unique exhibition.

Chanel's private rooms, which have been carefully preserved since her death in 1971, are captured in a series of 45 photographs that will go on display at the Saatchi Gallery in London, from Friday 12th September 2014 until Monday 22nd September.

In the meantime, Taylor-Johnson has released a 'teaser' image of the arresting mirrored staircase leading up to the apartment, which the director claims is inhabited by the designer's "spirit and soul."

"Shooting at Coco Chanel’s apartment was an unexpectedly absorbing experience,” said Taylor-Johnson. "The essence of Chanel is firmly rooted there in all of her possessions and I truly believe that her spirit and soul still inhabits the second floor."

The images capture Chanel's legendary furnishings, including the white satin-covered bergère she was pictured lounging on by Horst in 1937, as well as her Coromandel lacquered screens and gilt Venetian mirrors.

Other treasured objects still in the apartment include rock-crystal chandeliers adorned with the number 5 and her fashion house's famous double C, crystal balls and majestic gilded lions that represented her star sign Leo.

"The apartment is beautifully stylish," Taylor-Johnson added. "It feels like she had meticulously chosen every object.

The exhibition, entitled Second Floor, will be accompanied by a book of the same name.
