Rachel McAdams, Olivia Palermo, Kerry Washington, Kate Middleton... not the guest list for the most ridiculous celebrity party ever, but just some of the famous women who are fans of affordable London label Self Portrait.

The Duchess is the three-year-old fashion house’s most recent A-list devotee, opting for a £320 white maxi dress for her high-profile red carpet appearance at the premiere of A Street Cat Named Bob.

Her crocheted and pleated gown is a popular choice as a wedding dress, too.

The label’s signature feminine cuts and use of layered lace makes many of the dresses in its ready-to-wear collections first choice for fashion-savvy brides on a budget.

It also has a dedicated bridal collection featuring simple gowns made from guipure lace, silk, chiffon and floral appliques.

Designer Han Chong says the wedding gowns combine “tradition with the contemporary sartorial attitudes of the women of the ‘60s and ‘70s.”

They are priced between £500 and 750 – a relatively inexpensive proposition compared to many bridal shop options.

Chong says he is influenced by Alexander McQueen, who studied before him at Central St Martin’s.

He told Fashionista.com that he set up Self-Portrait to close a gap in the market for affordable stylish clothes, and is appealing to the woman who is “not afraid to stand out.”

I design thinking what women actually want, and then I design a wardrobe for them ...We develop the fabrics and try to do something a bit more special.
