Elisabeth Moss walked away with the gong for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama at the 2017 Emmy Awards – an accolade which she richly deserved.

And, while her censored acceptance speech dominated the headlines, The Handmaid’s Tale star also used her red carpet ensemble to send a secret message to the patriarchy. One which seemingly went completely unnoticed by the hordes of photographers and bloggers following her every move at the star-studded event.

Dressed in custom Prabal Gurung, Moss – who plays Offred/June in the feminist dystopian drama – looked every inch the classic Hollywood star in her strapless, millennial pink gown.

Her shoes, though, told a very different story.

According to designer Karla Welch’s Instagram page, Moss inscribed a pair of words on the bottom of her high heels, one on each sole.

And, while Welch only posted a pic of one of the shoes, it’s not hard to guess what the other word was.

You'll have to guess what the other shoe says.... our note to the patriarchy #teamresistance

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Welch added that this wasn’t Moss’ only fashionable ode to feminism.

Addressing the Gurung gown she dressed her client in, Welch (an outspoken critic of Donald Trump) explained: “[Gurung] reached out and said, ‘I’d love to make her a dress.’ She loves his clothes.

“He’s political, so I love everything he stands for. I love when he does a red carpet dress because it's a different side of him he does so well.”

Gurung added: “[Moss] is a beautiful representation of our brand ideals on the inside and out.

“The Handmaid's Tale tells the story of a woman's strength in a dark world through resistance.

“We wanted Elisabeth's strength as a woman and an actress to shine through embracing her femininity.”
