Fashion Stamps for SS12

UK designers honoured in new collection

The iconic creations of talented British fashion designers past and present feature in an arty new range of stamps from the Royal Mail, on sale from today (May 15).

The range includes Alexander McQueen's stunning duck feather dress, featured in his romantic autumn/winter 2009/2010 Horn of Plenty, pictured on the catwalk, below.

Jean Muir's elegant and minimal style is also celebrated in a stamp that features a burnt orange wrap dress and close-fitting hat.

Vivienne Westwood's Harlequin outfit, modelled by Naomi Campbell in 1993, features in one of the most vibrant stamps in the collection.

Pictured below is Campbell wearing the outfit on the catwalk, shortly after she famously stumbled in her towering heels.

Zandra Rhodes' gold Renaissance ballgown from 1981 features in one of the 10 images shot by renowned fashion photographer, Sølve Sundsbø.

Philip Parker, Royal Mail Stamps spokesman, said: “Britain is famous around the world for the creative vision of its fashion designers, from the glamour and sophistication of Norman Hartnell, the punk influence of Vivienne Westwood, through to the world-class designs of Alexander McQueen.”

Parker added, “British fashion has grown to become a major national industry. It employs about a million people and contributes directly some £21 billion to the UK economy. So it is an honour to be able to pay homage to some of the designers who made the industry what it is today.”

Pictured above: An elegant deep pink silk design by Norman Hartnell, who dressed the Queen for her wedding and coronation.

Clockwise from top left: A classic suit by the Queen's "favourite dressmaker" Hardy Amies, a psychedelic jacket by Granny Takes A Trip, a sleek Paul Smith design and a Tommy Nutter suit that was originally worn by Ringo Starr and recreated especially for the Royal Mail project.
