An all-hijab show has made history at Fashion Week

One of the most important shows of New York Fashion Week belongs to Anniesa Hasibuan, who has made history by sending every single one of her models down the runway in hijabs.

The Indonesian designer was met with a standing ovation for her collection, a shimmering patchwork of pastel silks, tactile jacquard and audacious bejewelled accessories inspired by her home country.

Melanie Elturk, the woman behind the Haute Hijab blog, says the all-hijab show - a first for the Big Apple - has made a "huge leap" towards breaking down negative stereotypes and "demystifying" the headscarves worn by some Muslim women.

“While many think fashion is frivolous, I believe in the power of fashion,” Elturk writes “It's just one of the outlets in which we make a cultural shift in today's society to normalise hijab in America."

Hasibuan, 30, is a relative newcomer to the industry but with a coveted NYFW show under her belt - and a history-making one at that - we're likely to see many more of her designer headscarves on the catwalk.
