Design duo Felder Felder unveils world-first sustainable dress made from car parts at LFW

This is a dress made entirely from car parts.

In a landmark collaboration with BMW, the Felder Felder designers have utilised materials from the electric BMW i3 and i8 to create a show-stopping piece revealed on Friday at their London Fashion Week show.

The designers behind the label, German twins Daniela and Annette Felder, are known for their use of recycled materials, using CDs and glass in their last collection in pullovers, blouses and jumpsuits.

They made this season's world-first sustainable carbon fibre dress - a shimmering black and silver A-line number with lightning flash pattern and feather-like cape sleeves - to mark the brand's 10th anniversary.

The collaboration is part of a wave of changes in the fashion industry, with designers making moves to create more sustainable collections.

Earlier this year Selfridges consulted with the Centre for Sustainable Fashion on leading sustainable designers to champion in its epic Oxford Street windows display, as part of the store’s annual Bright New Things initiative - with one designer being awarded a bursary of £30,000 to support their work.

And Ryan Roche, which showed its SS17 collection as part of NYFW this week, is a label committed to sustainable, low-impact production. Roche even works with a women's cooperative in Nepal, as well as supporting domestic manufacturing with her converted barn in upstate New York.

It's not just luxury labels getting involved either. H&M launched its Conscious Collection in 2010 and are the only retailer to offer a garment collection service in all stores worldwide, having collaborated with London College of Fashion on a project which launches this week.

The initiative sees 33 teams of design students create sustainable collections from the donated items collected in stores. A selection of the best collections will feature in the windows of H&M stores across London during LFW.
