Keep track of highlights from the New York Fashion Week spring/summer '17 shows, frows, parties and backstage...

Marc Jacobs

Courted controversy on Thursday evening with a dreadlocked beauty look on his models that prompted accusations of cultural appropriation.

Ralph Lauren looks West

Remember the '90s trend for Western-inspired fashion? Glittery cowgirl hats became a huge hit on club nights and flared jeans weren't complete without chunky pastel-coloured leather belts covered in studs.

Well, it's back! Ralph Lauren has revived the theme with a luxe-spin for spring/summer '17 that's available to buy straight away.

We'll just be in the loft, digging out our old accessories...

Stylist hosts a very fashionable dinner

NYFW might be in full swing but Monday night was all about British fashion as Stylist and Select Model Management joined forces to celebrate our Autumn 2016 Fashion Special.

Stylist contributors and a host of Select’s Best of British faces, including cover girl and Chanel favourite Sam Rollinson and show pro Poppy Okotcha, arrived at Dalloway Terrace in Bloomsbury to toast the gargantuan issue.

Following skinny proseccos in the lower bar, all took their place for an end of summer dream dinner on Dalloway’s secluded garden Terrace. As Jo Malone candles flickered, a menu of Dorset crab on Guinness bread, lamb cutlets and Earl Grey burnt cream was served, while guests deliberated over their favourite pages of the issue across the floral meadow table runner of sweet peas, larkspur and spray roses arranged by Wildabout.

Festivities continued late into the night, but not the early hours, due to the imminent London Fashion Week castings for the models in attendance. Guests left with Jo Malone pomegranate noir candles although Sam had a little something extra to carry, a larger than life replica of her Stylist cover.

Rodarte

Regal and romantic dresses with a rockstar attitude at Rodarte. Ruffles, embellishments and accessories were plentiful but the delicate fabrics gave the collection a light and delicate feel.

Stylist beauty writer Shannon Peter was backstage at the show

"The designers, Kate and Laura Mulleavy, are really into make-up," make-up artist James Kaliardos tells me backstage at Rodarte, "so they always have a clear vision for what they want me to create."

Rodarte

Rodarte

And for this season, their vision was all about capturing the youthful radiance of each model. He prepped the skin with plenty of moisturiser and used NARS new Soft Matte Complete Concealer to hide any patches of darkness or redness. Then he simply blended a taupe creamy eyeshadow stick along the bottom lash line to emphasise the eye and used a pink pearlescent shadow to dust the eyelids so with each turn of the head, the eyes gave a little glimmer.

And it was this sparkle that was reflected on the nails too. In perhaps my all time favourite nail look ever, nail tech Tracylee used Morgan Taylor's New School Nude nail polish on the nails for a glossy, healthy shine before carefully lining the cuticles with Glitter & Gold polish. She called it 'nail jewellery' and I'm asking for it at my next manicure appointment.

Tory Burch

Neat and preppy collides with bright and boho in Tory Burch's spring/summer '17 collection, which was watched by mega fan Jessica Alba from the frow. Jaunty sailboat motifs were patterned across neat jackets, playsuits and wide leg trousers, while florals were vibrant and folksy.

DKNY

Following on from an identikit posse of bowl cuts at Jeremy Scott, DKNY hit us with hoodies en masse.

Sexy, sporty and with a defiantly vampy beauty look for spring/summer, the futuristic collection played out with a backdrop of neon-lit scaffolding and finished with models in slouchy long-sleeved boilersuits stomping their platform trainers across the wooden runway to a banging beat.

Redefining liner at 3.1 Phillip Lim

Stylist beauty writer Shannon Peter was backstage at the show

At 3.1 Phillip Lim, Francelle Daly told me she was looking for a way to modernise eyeliner.

She started by circling the models' eyes in thick black liquid with a layer of kohl in the water line. Then she took a q-tip dipped in micellar water and erased the outer and inner corner.

Daly calls it "Negative space liner." I call it a genius way to make it look like you've made an effort with your make-up.

Kicks off Monday morning in New York with a bright pop of '80s cartoon fun...

Jeremy Scott

Jeremy Scott SS17

Stylist beauty writer Shannon Peter was backstage at the show

Jeremy Scott is always the show on my calendar that I most look forward to. He's known for creating a real sense of theatre with his work, and the beauty look never fails to pique my interest.

Unlike many of the NYFW shows, individuality wasn't the buzzword backstage. Wella's Eugene Souleimann told me he was striving for uniformity, with each and every model wearing a super glossy bowl cut wig with "A-line cut fringes, like a dress."

Jeremy Scott

Jeremy Scott's spring/summer '17 beauty look

On make-up, Kabuki told me he was inspired by 1980s New York when girls embraced colour in both their fashion and beauty choices.

Jeremy Scott make-up

He streamlined his colour palette down to just three key shades: lavender, green and orange and washed the colour over eyelids using powder eyeshadows, while intensifying the colour at the lash line with matching eyeliner.

Finished with a slick of coloured mascara, it's a sure fire way to make eyes pop.

Opening Ceremony

Brought wit and politics to proceedings with a "Pageant of the People" populated by celebrities and cutting edge comedians. Famous faces took to the runway as Portlandia creators Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen tried to distract them from their modelling duties.

The show was an examination of “immigration, economic inequality, police brutality, and gender discrimination,” designers Humberto Leon and Carol Lim wrote in the press notes as they urged people to vote in the upcoming US Presidential election. It also paid tribute to the victims of 9/11 on the 15th anniversary of the city's devastating terror attack.

You should vote because if you don't vote, you can't bitch.

Altuzarra

Summer fun has finally arrived at New York Fashion Week. Inspired by the "rebellious and youthful spirit" of David Lynch’s Wild at Heart, Joseph Altuzarra said his collection explores a modern take on romance and kitsch.

I wanted the collection to feel happy, vibrant and erotically charged.

- Joseph Altuzarra

Cherries and lemons appeared emoji-like, on bright python print blazers, while off-shoulder knits were teamed with curve-wrapping gingham pencil skirts or tassel-bottomed slouchy pants. Asymettrical tiers on skirts and spaghetti strap dresses provided instant swish underneath cinched waists.

Victoria Beckham

Stylist beauty writer Shannon Peter was backstage at the show

Dust off your straighteners because if the beauty look at Victoria Beckham is anything to go by (and well, it is) you're going to need them next season.

Hair mastermind Guido was relying on ghd's Elite styler to create a super straight, uniform look on all the models. Backstage, he told me: "The Victoria Beckham aesthetic is the new glamour - sleek, chic and minimal."

Runway pictures: Victoria Beckham wants us all wearing crushed velvet for SS17

He prepped the models' damp hair with Redken's Pillow Proof Primer (an industrial strength heat protector) and pulled a small amount of Redken's Satinwear cream through the lengths to give the finished product that brilliant shine. Next, he blowdried the hair with a barrel brush (strong arms required for this) and meticulously ran the straightening irons over the hair so it forms this straight, smooth curtain. In the words of Guido, it's "high maintenance simplicity."

The hair tool of choice backstage at VB

On make-up, VB was showcasing her new collection with Estee Lauder. The focus of the make-up look was perfect, post-facial skin but it was the six girls with eyeshadow we were drawn to. Usually those rich navy blues and emerald greens can look try-hard on the eyes, but softly swiped across the eyelid with a flick of the wrist kept the whole thing much more modern. We love.

Madonna was on the frow and Nicki Minaj held up the show by arriving late, but it wasn't all about the #Wangsquad - the designer dropped an Adidas Originals collaboration:

The collection that preceded it was California surf cool, with '90s-inspired beachy tees and crop jumpers. Neon camis, shorts and slips were trimmed with black lace, while waists were on show and defined with wraparound belts and halter necklines.

Guido Palau came up with the textured look in the models' hair using Redken's Fashion Waves Sea Salt and Rough Paste 12, while Diane Kendal created the fresh-faced make-up look with Nars - keeping lips muted and dyeing brows for an authentic sun-bleached surfer look.

"It's that look and natural colour that someone gets if their skin has been kissed by the sun," she says.

In yet another ambitious piece of catwalk theatre, Tommy Hilfiger took over Manhattan's Pier 16 to create a carnival open to two thousand members of the public who had won tickets to the show.

Led by supermodel and super-Instagrammer Gigi Hadid, it was streamed around the world, with all the clothes available to purchase instantly online. Even Taylor Swift popped up on the front row, dressed in an outfit by the new Tommy x Gigi collection that debuted at Friday' event.

There was a strong nautical theme, with oversized jumpers and naval-style button-up trousers, while the slouchy red tracksuits paid more than a nod to the '90s...
