Top 5 beauty moments from Paris Fashion Week

Stylist's Beauty Assistant Shannon Peter was backstage at the shows  in Paris.

From the uber natural to the avant garde, yet again Paris Fashion  Week didn’t  disappoint. While Derek Zoolander might have stolen the  show when he stormed the  Valentino runway on Tuesday, the beauty  experts were making waves of their own  backstage, pushing the  boundaries of their creativity further than ever.

Here are my five favourite beauty moments from Paris Fashion Week:

5. FERAL HAIR AT VIVIENNE WESTWOOD

Sam McKnight described his hair look at Vivienne Westwood a bit feral, so its no wonder his weapon of choice wasn’t a highly advanced, developed hair product, but rather sugar water. Yep, sugar in water. The perfect formula to create a mussed texture of braids and waves; neither up nor down, just somewhere in between. “Its hair at the end of its tether,” McKnight explained. And its an easy one to make your own – braid hair in small sections, remove and pin up gregariously for a messy yet chic style.

4. FRIZZ BALLS AT ESTEBAN CORTAZAR

Eugene Souleiman, I salute you. You’ve answered every curly girl’s prayers, including mine, in making frizz ‘a thing’. And a beautiful thing at that. In this show, Wella Professional’s Global Creative Director, made masses of frizz (through a laborious process of braiding, ironing, hairspraying, brushing and backcombing) that he then slicked to the crown of the head for a humid, sweaty, jungle vibe.

3. GO FASTER STRIPES AT KENZO

Mac make-up artist Aaron de Mey’s main challenge at Kenzo was the large show space; the models would be further from the audience so he needed a look that would grab their attention. And he found the answer in these bright white free-spirited paint stroke gestures, slashed across the eyelids. And the nails mirrored the erratic nature of the eye with a little bit of unrefined monochrome nail art.

2. PUNKY HAND STITCHED HAIR AT HAIDER ACKERMAN

From the ornate to the undone, the mood at Haider Ackerman was a lot less regal. Aveda Guest Artist Kamo went super punky, haphazardly gathering the girls’ hair into a messy updo. Pinned in place, he then weaved thick thread throughout the hair to create intricate yet imprecise braided patterns. A little like when you patch up old jeans: charmingly inaccurate and a little rebellious.

1. OVERLY EMBELLISHED FACES AT GIVENCHY

I couldn’t help but feel for Givenchy’s girls this season; having your face plastered with piercings and encrusted bijoux can’t have been comfortable. But as a spectator, a safe distance from the baskets of rubies, emeralds and pearls, it was a sight to marvel. Pat McGrath embellished each girl's face with septum rings and facial brooches, framed by hair stylist Luigi Murenu’s beautiful kiss curls pasted to each girls forehead. As a look, it may be hugely impractical, a little bit garish and wholly OTT, but I can’t help but feel that’s the fun of it.
