Five epic summer looks in film and how to recreate them

It's official; the UK is in the midst of a heatwave and we couldn't be more thrilled.

However, after months of layering our usual summer clothes under cardigans, jackets, raincoats and anything else to keep out the cold, we're in need of a little inspiration for dressing in the intense heat.

So we looked to some of our favourite summertime films and TV shows to curate the definitive summer lookbook, and even found similar pieces to buy on the high street. Happy sunbathing!

The demure fifties

Gwyneth Paltrow was a beautifully demure fifties style icon as Marge in The Talented Mr Ripley. Her loose silk shirts left unbuttoned and tied at the waist were the perfect accompaniment to her long, floaty skirts. Best of all, she wasn't one to shy away from colour or pattern, which are two fashion statements that always say 'summer' to us.

The preppy picnic

Picnic perfection in Cruel Intentions

Arguably the most iconic picnic scene in a film thanks to that kiss, we want to channel Selma Blair's character Cecile next time we casually decide to have fruit and wine in the park. Her pastel pink check skirt with matching pink top and green jumper knotted casually around her shoulders is preppy perfection.

Get the look: Try this Check Pencil Skirt, £28 from asos.com, and this Light Green Knitted Jumper, £10 from stories.com

The staple denim skirt

Julia Roberts as the feisty Erin Brockovich was all of our career and summer dressing goals rolled into one. Her staple wardrobe of a denim skirt and brightly coloured tank top was always both stylish and cool. With denim skirts making a fashion revival for Spring/Summer 2015, the look is perfectly on point.

Get the look: Team this simple Slim Ribbed Tank Top, £10 from topshop.com, with this dark Denim Pelmet Skirt, £26 from warehouse.co.uk

The rooftop party

Sex and the City

When it comes to fun heatwave dressing, the Sex and the City crew had it covered with their tiny two pieces. Samantha and Miranda worked matching crop tops and shorts in sailor stripes and bold floral patterns respectively, while Carrie and Charlotte paired floral halternecks and plain shorts.

Get the look: For a matching floral two piece, try this sweet handmade set, £25 from etsy.com. Otherwise, we recommend wearing this Paisley Floral Top, £16 from missselfridge.com, with these Short Sweatshirt Shorts, £8.99 from hm.com

The bold and the beautiful

Vicky Cristina Barcelona summer outfits

The characters of Cristina (played by Scarlett Johansson) and Maria Elena (played by Penelope Cruz) in Vicky Cristina Barcelona gave us plenty of summer style inspiration. Gingham is a big trend for Spring/Summer 2015 and you can keep it from looking too childish by pairing a bright gingham button-down shirt with dark high-waisted shorts, a la Cristina. If you opt for a playful white summer dress, like Maria Elena, toughen up the look with a stylish black hat.

Get the look: Channel Cristina with this Fred Perry Gingham Top, £36 from asos.com, and these Sandro Woven Shorts, £76, selfridges.co.uk. For Maria Elena's look, we love this Dream Catcher Overlay Dress, £76 from topshop.com with this Fedora Hat, £15 from warehouse.co.uk
