Furore over 'fetishising' thigh gap video

American lifestyle website Nowness has come under fire for glorifying the thigh gap.

Titled 'The Magic Gap', the website's short film aims to "diffuse" the recent obsession with thigh gaps, however it features the space between the inner thighs of multiple models through a "romanticized, sun-kissed" lens. The voiceover is a collection of various passers-by describing what they think ‘the magic gap’ means.

One man defines it as "the gap between being friends with someone and going out with them", while another woman answered, "It sounds like a political term or something out of a cartoon".

New York-based fashion photographer and director, Guy Aroch, who created the video said, "As a male, I didn’t even know it [the thigh gap] was a thing."

"It [the video] was more a comment on the mysterious fixation women have," added Aroch.

However, the public took to the comments section on Nowness to express their anger over the video of women's thigh gaps, saying that it sends the wrong message instead of addressing the issue.

One commenter wrote, "Your video didn't convey this. ALL it did was sexualize it," while another expressed, "I am infuriated Nowness publish sexist ***** like this. Not only are we forced to stare down faceless womens crotches... The commentary are neither enlightening or entertaining".

Others took to Twitter to comment, saying "this is sickening" and "This is how NOT to talk to women about our bodies".

Nowness have not issued a statement. Aroch explains his approach to the subject in the video description saying, "I was trying to be fly-on-the-wall and quite voyeuristic".

The video is part of a weekly '#DefineBeauty' series on the website, which aims to highlight the different attitudes and themes surrounding body image.
