Gloria Steinem just checked a big fashion milestone off her list

There are so many things we love about Gloria Steinem. From her role as a trailblazing feminist force, to her never ending unconventional wisdom, to her non-stop fierce fight for women’s reproductive rights, this badass never fails to inspire.

But it’s her unwavering passion for life that draws us ever closer.

Which is why, at the age of 83, it doesn’t surprise us one bit to learn that Gloria has made it her mission to check off one of her big fashion #lifegoals.

Gloria Steinem

That’s right, she’s only gone and attended her first-ever New York Fashion Week show.

Sitting front row (of course) at Prabal Gurung – alongside power players Huma Abedin, DeRay Mckesson and Cleo Wade - the feminist and fashion icon took to Instagram to share the moment with her followers.

“There is a first time for everything, even at 83! First NYFW show at Prabal Gurung, a kind man doing great work in fashion and beyond,” Gloria posted on Monday 11 September.

High fashion and feminism have intertwined in recent seasons as designers convey the societal fight for equality.

Just last year, Gurung, a vocal feminist, used key quotes from famous women in his designs last season, with words from the likes of Steinem, Susan B Anthony and Emily Dickinson emblazoned on loose t-shirts, floaty dresses and trouser hems.

Citing Steinem's My Life on the Road and Maya Angelou's Phenomenal Woman as inspiration, Gurung dedicated the collection to his mother and her "fight against male chauvinism."

So it makes sense that, this season, the Nepalese designer invited Steinem to sit on the FROW at his show.

Gurung’s theme for his new spring/summer 2018 collection is ‘stronger in colour’, and he made sure to use a diverse model line-up, too: Ashley Graham, Candice Huffine and the Hadid sisters all walked the runway with aplomb.

At the end of the show, Gurung graced the runway wearing a tee emblazoned with the slogan ‘Resist With Love’.

The shirt and another tee with the slogan I AM A MICHELLE (like us, he’s a huge fan of Michelle Obama) were given to guests on the way out, according to The Cut.
