Stylist's shopping editor Lucy Reber picks her favourite looks from Hollywood's first big awards ceremony of the year.
The perfect antidote to January’s gloom is the Golden Globes - ideally timed escapism from the return to work and grey weather.
Watching otherworldly actresses sashay down the red carpet in fantastical sequinned creations never fails to raise the spirits. This year was no exception, with ruffles, tassels and intricate beading all making it into our Golden Globes red carpet gallery.
Surprisingly none of the big stars were rocking ‘label of the moment’ Gucci, but Tom Ford, Louis Vuitton and Dior all made it into our favourites. Here are our top five picks from the night.
1. Julianne Moore in Tom Ford
"I am a huge fan of Julianne’s understated style. She may be in a floor length sequinned gown, but the midnight blue colour, high necked shape and lack of fussy adornment keep this dress feeling chic rather than overdone. The cut out detail at the neck is completely of the moment and her simple, loose hair and slightly punky rings finish the look to perfection."
2. Alicia Vikander in Louis Vuitton
"Double-nominee Alicia is the name on everyone’s lips, so I was eager to see what she’d wear. This crisp white Louis Vuitton gown made a nod to SS16 Prairie Girl trend, with ruffles at the neck and shoulders. While demure at the front, simple cross over straps exposed the back in a modern way, accentuated by her plaited up do."
3. Jennifer Lawrence in Dior
"The awards weren’t awash with colour this year, so J-Law’s scarlet Dior gown really stood out. The lantern effect top, cut out bodice and slim skirt combine to create a contemporary silhouette, perfect for the young actress. With Raf Simon’s departure from Dior after his SS16 show, it will be interesting to see what’s in store for the label next season."
4. Lady Gaga in Atelier Versace
"This look epitomises old school Hollywood glamour. Gaga’s hourglass velvet gown, complete with a sweetheart neckline, accentuated hips and fish tail - from her long-time collaborators Versace - is like something straight from the Golden Age. Her platinum blond locks and dramatic cat’s eye liner make the look feel cutting edge, despite their retro origins, resulting in red carpet perfection."
5. Viola Davis in Marchesa
"Viola looks at ease and elegant in red carpet favourites Marchesa. The label, named after socialite Marchesa Luisa Casati, really know how to do event dressing. This starburst covered tulle gown is certainly no exception, with its glittering silver embellishment standing out like fireworks against an inky night sky. It’s nice to see some romantic glamour making an appearance."
