Balmain for H&M; the latest designer collaboration is announced

The next H&M designer collaboration has arrived, and it’s better than we ever imagined. The high street retailer will be releasing a line designed by Balmain on November 5 and we can barely contain our excitement.

The Creative Director of the French fashion house, Olivier Rousteing, quelled all other rumours by announcing the partnership at last night’s Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas. The high-street brand later confirmed the news via an Instagram video, inviting followers to join the ‘balmaination’.

Models Jordan Dunn and Kendall Jenner had dropped clues to the announcement earlier in the evening, posting selfies of themselves with Rousteing, en route to the awards. The duo later provided a sneak-peak of the collection, wearing pieces on the red carpet – Jenner in an embellished blazer and Dunn, a scarlet silk mini skirt and mesh striped top.

Speaking about the collaboration, Rousteing said, “I want to talk to my generation – this is my main aim as a designer. H&M allows me the unique possibility of bringing everyone into the world of Balmain, getting a piece of the dream and creating a global #HMBalmaination: a movement of togetherness, fuelled on a hashtag.”

Being secretive with @olivier_rousteing and @kendalljenner. We have some news for you at the #BBMAs! Stay tuned!

The collection will be the 11th in a line of prestigious designer collaborations with H&M, which launched in 2004 with Karl Lagerfeld and celebrated its tenth anniversary last year with sportswear designer, Alexander Wang.  This latest collaboration is set to be quite removed from Wang’s active aesthetic, though.

The couturier, Pierre Balmain launched his first collection in 1945, inspired by Christian Dior’s highly feminine post-war designs. He was often referred to as the ‘King of French fashion’, designing luxurious beaded and embroidered evening gowns with the aim of simple glamour.

Rousteing took the helm at Balmain, aged only 25 in 2011, and has since imbued collections with a modern, edgy touch, drawing on the influence of his predecessor at the house, Christophe Decarnin. There will definitely be something for everyone: expect slick pieces injected with a hefty dose of sex appeal.

Rousteing said, "the collaboration felt extremely natural to me: H&M is a brand that everybody connects to. It calls for unity, and I am all for it.” Amen to that.

Get ready for Balmainia.
