Jet-set style: six airport fashion tips we learnt from celebrities on their travels

rexfeatures_4783913d.jpg

If you're anything like the team at stylist.co.uk, all you want to wear when boarding a plane is a cosy pair of pyjamas and some fleece slippers.

Unfortunately social norms mean this comfy attire is generally frowned upon in airports, on public transport or pretty much anywhere other than your bedroom (woe!). So, even if you take your favourite PJs to change into once you've boarded, it's probably best to wear something else beforehand.

With holiday season upon us we've taken a look at how celebrities dress when they're off to catch a plane and pulled together some style tips, below.

Happy flying!

1. Big scarf

The temperatures on airplanes can vary wildly, and all too many times we've found ourselves shivering in our optimistic summer dresses. Take a large scarf, shawl or pashmina that you can wrap around your shoulders to keep warm.

Get the look: Go for a bold patterned scarf, £37 from smallable.com, or a block colour option, £15.99 from zara.com/uk

2. Trainers

Trainers are the perfect in-transit choice of footwear. Go for a pair of plain white sneakers and style with plenty of denim.

Get the look: You can't go wrong with a classic pair of Adidas Stan Smiths, £72 from adidas.co.uk, or if trainers aren't your thing try an elegant pair of white and gold loafers, £70 from butterflytwists.com

3. All black

Anna Wintour may have claimed 'head-to-toe black' as the one fashion statement she would never make, but here at stylist.co.uk we reckon there is something effortlessly stylish about an all black outfit. If it's good enough for Rooney Mara and Gwen Stefani, it's good enough for us!

Get the look: Stay warm in this collarless black coat, £50 from frenchconnection.com, and pair with black Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses, £120 from net-a-porter.com, plus these comfy wrap front jogging bottoms, £30 from topshop.com

4. Tan ankle boots and blue denim

Tan ankle boots and blue denim jeans make for a stylish look that works perfectly for casual, comfortable airport dressing.

Get the look: Go for a pair of leather boots with a low heel, £95 from dunelondon.com, and team them with straight legged jeans, £65 from asos.com

5. Plenty of layers

If you're lucky enough to be leaving the chilly UK for a warmer climate, you will want to dress in plenty of layers. Think a soft tee under a jumper or flannel shirt with a lightweight jacket that can be gleefully shrugged off as soon as you arrive.

Get the look: Start with a loose jersey top that will keep you both warm and cool depending on the climate, £14.95 from gap.co.uk, and layer with a light knitted jumper, £25 from warehouse.co.uk Top with a light coat, £120.50 from petit-bateau.co.uk

6. Dressing for an upgrade

A little birdie told us that when it comes to airport style, we should dress for an upgrade (which would almost be worth the agony of standing in baggage reclaim in a pair of towering heels!)
