Karlie Kloss has apologised for appropriating Japanese culture in a photoshoot published by Vogue.

The supermodel dressed as a Geisha for the March issue of the magazine, wearing a traditional patterned robe and hiding her blonde hair under a black wig.

The images sparked fury when they were published online, causing the 24-year-old to take to Twitter to apologise for the spread.

“I am truly sorry for participating in a shoot that was not culturally sensitive,” she wrote in a statement shared with her two and a half million followers.

“My goal is, and always will be, to empower and inspire women. I will ensure my future shoots and projects reflect that mission.”

However, it is not the first time the model – whose family heritage is German and Danish – has been accused of appropriating another culture.

Back in 2012, Kloss also took to twitter to apologise for an wearing a fringed leather bra and knickers paired with a replica Native American headdress on the runway of a Victoria’s Secret show.
