This week's lunchtime masterclass is with international designer Maarten van der Horst.
Maarten graduated with a BA from the ArtEZ Institute of the Arts in Arnhem, Holland. During his studies he completed an internship with Chloé in Paris, which “taught me enough to make me want to do my own thing”. He then moved to London for his MA at Central Saint Martins.
His AW11 graduate collection channelled transvestism and escapism, marrying intricately embroidered, second-hand Nylon petticoats with Hawaiian shirts, Capri trousers and Bermuda shorts, creating a John Waters-inspired wardrobe. Immediately after his graduation, Maarten started his own studio and has been showing under Lulu Kennedy’s Fashion East umbrella since spring/summer 2012.
Maarten’s first collection took the fashion world by storm, and it was solely down to him that the Hawaiian shirt was reinstated as part of the contemporary style vernacular. He showed his latest collection as part of the BFC NEWGEN crop of young designers at Tate Modern's Tanks and has launched a limited edition lunch pot for TOTAL Greek Yoghurt, with all proceeds going to Action for Children.
