The art of shoes: New Manolo Blahnik exhibition opens in St Petersburg

From Carrie spending her entire paycheck on shoes in Sex and the City, to those bridal stilettos that became the must-have accessory to walk down the aisle in, the name Manolo Blahnik has become  synonymous with phenomenal footwear.

His shoes – which have become artworks in their own right – are all complemented with beautiful, idiosyncratic illustrations that have themselves made up several coffee table books.

So it’s no wonder the shoe designer’s work is the subject of a new exhibition at St. Petersburg’s State Hermitage Museum.

The exhibition, which opens on Thursday 11th May, will display over 200 pairs of shoes and 80 original illustrations, ranging from the 1970s to present day, as well as never-before-seen footage of the designer at work.

Guest-curator Cristina Carrillo de Albornoz was keen for people to see Blahnik’s creations in the same way she does, saying: “in each style, he tries to capture what he considers to be the essence of elegance, femininity and beauty which he has channelled and entwined with his various cultural and emotional influences.”

Divided into six-separate sections, the display will broach Blahnik’s geographical and environmental influences, as well as art and architecture.

Manolo shoes are considered to be a work of art

The exhibition will include the designs Blahnik made for Sofia Coppola’s 2006 film Marie Antoinette, as well as those inspired by the late fashion editor Anna Piaggi and sixties siren Brigitte Bardot.

The exhibition will be at The Hermitage until July 23rd before touring to Prague, Madrid and Toronto in 2018 and 2019.
