Meryl Streep actually has a handbag with Barack and Michelle Obama’s faces on it

President Barack Obama professed his undying love for Meryl Streep back in 2014 – and there’s no doubt in our minds that the feeling is well and truly mutual. Not only did she attend his star-studded farewell party at the White House, but the award-winning actor has also forged a firm friendship with his wife, Michelle (the pair have even been to Africa together).

But, like we always* say, no friendship is official until one of you is walking around with the other’s face emblazoned on a handbag. And Streep has finally (finally!) taken that all-important step.

Yup, we’re deadly serious.

Streep was recently spotted strutting her stuff in New York City – and, as everyone tends to do with the real-life Miranda Priestley, all eyes were on her fashion accessories.

This time, though, there were no designer labels to ogle: instead, we had the smiling faces of the Obamas smiling back at us from Streep’s kitschy bag.

Check. It. Out.

While we’d never normally rank people in terms of love for the former POTUS and FLOTUS, we’re pretty confident that Streep misses the Obamas more than anybody else.

Of course, Streep has never been afraid to make her political opinions known: earlier this year, she went to town on Donald Trump at the Golden Globes, referencing the moment that the Republican candidate had mocked disabled New York Times reporter Serge Kovaleski in 2015.

Speaking about Trump’s cruelty without ever using his name, she continued: “It made its intended audience laugh, and show their teeth. It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter. Someone he outranked in privilege, power and the capacity to fight back.

“It kind of broke my heart when I saw it, and I still can’t get it out of my head, because it wasn’t in a movie. It was real life.

“And this instinct to humiliate, when it’s modelled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life, because it kinda gives permission for other people to do the same thing. Disrespect invites disrespect, violence incites violence. And when the powerful use their position to bully others we all lose. OK, go on with it.”

Streep went on to add: “We need the principled press to hold power to account, to call him on the carpet for every outrage,” she said. “That’s why our founders enshrined the press and its freedoms in the Constitution.

“So I only ask the famously well-heeled Hollywood Foreign Press and all of us in our community to join me in supporting the Committee to Protect Journalists, because we’re gonna need them going forward, and they’ll need us to safeguard the truth.”

Trump’s response, naturally, was immediate and idiotic.

Dubbing her a “Hillary flunky who lost big”, Trump went on to commit sacrilege by claiming that Streep is “one of the most overrated actresses in Hollywood”.

Tell that to her cupboard of glittering gongs and accolades, you tiny-handed buffoon.

*Yeah, we’ve never said that before. But it sounded good, didn’t it?
