Executive fashion director Kitty McGee is opting for a single-breasted minimal wool coat. “Lightweight and unlined, these coats have a looser, unstructured feel.” Layer over a denim jacket or chunky knit on colder days, or a logo T-shirt and cropped, frayed jeans when it’s warmer. Feeling bold? Add a pop of new-season colour.

A collaboration with Vetements and Mackintosh has brought the trench to the forefront of fashion again. Fashion assistant Sophie Henderson says, “I’ve gone for khaki in a nod to this season’s utility trend.” Choose a style no longer than calf length and don’t buckle the belt – all stylists are knotting theirs now.

These are the hit of the season for their modern cut and practicality. Fashion director Alexandra Fullerton has already invested in Zara’s navy rubberised anorak: “I love the sporty, minimal style, but it also keeps out any rain that falls on my commute.” Wear with jeans or a skirt no longer than two inches from the jacket hem.

We’ve spied a slew of street stylers in bold checks that feel fresher than winter’s muted plaid. Fashion editor Lucy Reber says: “These coats make a statement but come in traditional silhouettes.” Mainly monochrome, perhaps with a flash of red, add white trainers and cropped trousers to keep it modern.
