With Gwyneth Paltrow as the face of Coach, Hailee Steinfeld modelling for Miu Miu and Helena Bonham Carter at the helm of Marc Jacobs’A/W 2011 campaign, we were unsurprised to see acclaimed actress Thandie Newton (blessed with cheekbones that could cut glass) at the forefront of Louis Vuitton’s latest project.
But this is no run-of-the-mill glossy ad campaign. Inspired by Louis Vuitton’s belief in “embracing the contemporary and avant-garde”, Double Exposure is a digital film project that invites artists, filmmakers and peformers to sit for a portrait using the 19th century collodion wet plate photographic process.
The result is an ethereal, otherworldly collection of photos of Thandie posing in some of the brand’s covetable A/W 2011 collection (featuring forties tea dresses and peter pan collars), alongside some of her treasured personal possessions, including a passport, teddy bear and an oil painting.
As well as creating a visually striking collection of images, Thandie said the project was a meaningful experience, stating “We’re getting into the history of me through the items I’ve chosen. Each picture is so unique so it just creates this desire to be my most essential self.”
The full film will go live on the Louis Vuitton Facebook page on September 8, but until then, enjoy the trailer of Thandie’s sitting above.
