The most fabulous fashion moments in Clueless

It's been, like, totally 20 years since Cher (Alicia Silverstone), Dee (Stacey Dash), Tai (Brittany Murphy) and their inspirational wardrobes first came to our attention in the film "Clueless", released in 1995.

The girls' brightly coloured outfits were a far cry from the grunge trend that dominated the early nineties and their fitted, girly clothes were a welcome contrast to the baggy trousers and loosely fitting plaid shirts that were a wardrobe staple of nineties girls everywhere.

Costume designer Mona May was inspired by the more high fashion trends of the era and icons such as Sophia Loren and the outfits she put together are so iconic that they are still relevant today.

To celebrate the anniversary of the film's release, we look back at the most fabulous fashion moments, from matching plaid suits to the ultimate little white dress.

The ultimate shopping outfit

Cher goes shopping

Cher’s shopping ensemble is an inspiration to us all. Although cropped suede jackets are now more in favour than longline blazers, a crisp white shirt will never go out of style, while this mini-skirt is on point for the current seventies trend.

Some may think she is “just a ditz with a credit card” but Cher has got shopping chic down to a T.

The nineties slip dress

A variety of slip dresses dominated Cher's 60-outfit-strong wardrobe. From this vintage red number with spaghetti straps to an iconic white Calvin Klein dress, Cher inspired a trend for slip dresses and spaghetti straps that dominated the late nineties and the wardrobe of Rachel and Monica in TV show Friends.

And the nineties slip is still big news today, with a legion of celebrity fans. Rihanna gave the trend a boyish look by pairing her slip dress with scuffed trainers and fur while out and about in New York this month while Anne Hathaway wore a glamorous navy slip on the red carpet of the Instellar premiere last October.

The matching plaid suits

Cher and Dee co-ordinated perfectly

When it came to picking outfits in the morning, Cher’s digitally enhanced wardrobe gave her a huge advantage over us mere mortals. Her perfectly matched separates are a case in point, with this plaid blazer and mini skirt working perfectly against her yellow sweater vest and white shirt. She also matched with "besty" Dee, who deserves a special mention for this elaborate, PVC topped hat.

The plaid skirt suits starred in the first womenswear collection from Jill Stuart, who was inspired by the straight lines and tailoring of her daughter's traditional school uniform. And they're not going anywhere, with plaid set to be big news for Autumn/Winter 2015 after featuring heavily in the collections at Coach and Michael Kors.

The gothic look

Cher works the gothic trend

Cher was well ahead of the fash pack with this take on the gothic trend, which is set to be one of the biggest themes for Autumn/Winter 2015. Alexander Wang embraced the look on the catwalk with plenty of black studded leather and chained petticoat skirts while Marc Jacobs paired gothic tradition with formal tweed.

Update your look and copy Cher's lead with a sheer black top, crucifix necklace and black jeans. Add lashings of dark lipstick and you’re good to go.

The preppy makeover

The Clueless cast

Cher proved her make-over credentials when she gave awkward newcomer Tai an image overhaul, swapping her baggy, grungey staples for a more fitted, preppy look. This outfit was largely influenced by the sixties, from the hair scrunchy to the sweater set, while Cher and Dee were rocking seventies suede mini skirts.

The outfits also inspired a craze for thigh-high socks, with women everywhere relinquishing loose-fitting trousers in favour of sky high socks and tiny skirts.

The layered look

Cher fails her driving test

Cher had a penchant for mixing and matching a variety of styles and this layered outfit, worn on the day she failed her driving test, was no exception. Frilly blouses were big news in the nineties and continue to resurface in current collections, with gentle ruffles and frills starring in Matthew Williamson's Spring/Summer 2015 collection.

The mini sleeveless jumper was a throwback to Bonnie and Clyde and can be seen all over the high street, with cropped tops and jackets making an appearance for spring.

The Alaia party dress

Cher wearing Alaia

Cher was dressed to perfection in this little red Azzedine Alaïa dress with matching Mary Janes for a party at the Valley. The Tunisian designer, who was popular in the eighties for his slinky ready-to-wear collections, was one of the major influences for the film's costume designer Mona May.

The mini dress also worked to secure the attentions of Cher's love interest Christian, and the star had some unique dating advice to offer, telling us that, “Sometimes you have to show a little skin. This reminds boys of being naked, and then they think of sex.”

The beret

Cher in a beret

Cher's iconic black beret added a touch of French class to her plaid skirt suit and sparked a huge trend for the hats across the late nineties. The simple accessory shows no signs of dropping out of favour, with Marc Jacobs sending his models down the catwalk wearing sparkly, embellished berets for the Marc by Marc Jacobs Autumn/Winter 2015 collection.
