Woman kicked out of shopping mall for “inappropriate” clothing (aka a Finding Nemo top)

When it comes to listing clothing we find inappropriate, a tank top with a sweet Finding Nemo picture on it wouldn’t even make the cut.

Yet apparently, Pixar’s internationally-loved, child-friendly cartoon is deemed “inappropriate” in some parts of the world, with a woman in Michigan being turfed out of a mall for daring to wear a Finding Nemo tank top paired – audaciously – with denim shorts and flat white shoes.

Hannah Pewee donned the outrageous outfit to join her sister for a trip to the Woodland Mall in Grand Rapids, Michigan, over the weekend, where summer temperatures had soared to 90 degrees.

However, she was swiftly “kicked out” of the mall by security, after someone reported her outfit for being inappropriate.

Taking to Facebook in shock (below), Pewee wrote, “I am so angry right now I'm shaking. I felt so embarrassed I almost cried.

“All because a stranger didn't like how I dressed.”

Sharing an image of herself in the outfit, with a handful of shopping bags in the background, Pewee wrote that both the mall and the anonymous complainer should be “ashamed” of themselves for complaining about her outfit.

“It's my body, and it's hot outside! I'm not going to show up in jeans and a sweater, sorry,” she wrote. “I was out having a fun time with my sister and next thing I know, I'm out on the street.”

Pewee’s experience struck a chord with people around the globe and her post swiftly went viral, with over 13,000 likes and 8,600 shares (at the time of writing).

And taking to the comments section below the article, internet users took the opportunity to have their say about the policing of women’s bodies that is (still) so evident today.

“Silly me I forgot I am a mere woman and my body should be hidden not flaunted. Cover up them ankles ladies, it is 1817 after all,” wrote one user. “There is absolutely nothing wrong with how you are dressed in the summer. You are owed an apology,” added another.

And rounding off her post, Pewee echoed the sentiments of pretty much every woman living in the world today.

“Slut-shaming how girls are dressed is deplorable and outdated, and it needs to stop,” she wrote.

We couldn’t agree more.
