“I am sick of dealing with it” woman vents frustration at everyday sexual harassment in viral post

A woman has shut down anyone who has said women's clothes are the cause for sexual harassment and abuse after she was hassled by a man on the street while dressed in a long parker coat and knee-high boots.

New Yorker Christen Brandt was walking in a crowded subway station on Thursday (28 January) morning, when a man passing by her said: “Damn, you have some great legs.”

When she ignored him and walked away, he turned around, followed her and said, "Did you hear me, honey? I said you have nice legs. Damn! Thank you."

"It was the "thank you" that got me," wrote Brandt in a Facebook post that day, which has since been shared over 37,700 times. "As if my 5 inches of legging-covered skin were there for him. Given as a gift wrapped in brown tights. Existing in the world for him to appreciate, or not."

She concluded her post with a powerful message: "Next time you wonder whether your skirt is too short, next time you ask your teen daughter to change her clothes, or the next time you hear about school dress codes in the news, remember this photo."

"I am in a fucking parka and boots. And it. doesn't. matter. All women have these moments. All of us. And yet the world acts as if it's still our problem to fix."

"Get your shit together, guys. I, for one, am sick of dealing with it."

Other women have taken to Brandt's post to share their opinions on the cause of the ongoing problem. 

One Facbeook user says, "Part of the problem is men think they're (sometimes) doing us a favor by offering what they think is a compliment ... And it's not."

Another added, "The boys need to be taught to respect woman so they grow up to be respectable men!" [Sic]

Brandt, who is the co-founder of She’s the First, an NGO that sponsors girls’ education in low-income countries, later tweeted: "Watching this conversation bloom & hearing your similar experiences has been incredible."
