Your new season staples

There’s a lot of pleasure to be found in updating your wardrobe for the new season, but the most satisfying feeling of all is when you find something you wear again and again and again.

For twenty years, easy-to-wear wardrobe staples have been the British brand’s trademark – always in quality fabrics and flattering shapes with vibrant colours and uplifting prints. Spring/summer 2013 is no different, and new key collections include Sixties chic – think clean, uncluttered shapes in Formica tones – pops of fruity colours to mix and match and new spots and stripes essentials for transitional dressing.

Here, five fashion bloggers tell us about the style staples they couldn’t live without – from printed summer dresses to must-have cropped trousers.

The print dress by Rosalind Jana

“The printed dress encapsulates my idealised version of the countryside. It inspires images of picnics, fields of tall grass, lazing on a sunny Sunday afternoon and stately homes. Of course, the reality is often a little colder and greyer than the Brideshead version I would like to imagine – but there’s still a whisper of spring in pastel shades and patterns, even when the clouds hang overhead.”

The colour pop knit by Amanda Start

“A brightly coloured knit is the perfect transitional piece and helps to inject a little personality into everyday basics. Great for lifting an off-duty look such as jeans, boots and a classic trench in winter, it adds a much needed colour pop on dull days and can elevate work wear when paired with a tailored trouser suit or leather pencil skirt.”

The stripe top by Johanna Payton

“A simple, soft, striped cotton jersey top is so easy to wear in spring and summer: cool, comfortable and versatile – you can dress it up or down. It’s a winner with jeans or shorts; but style a brightly-coloured stripe top with a clashing floral skirt, neon skinny jeans or cute cropped trousers and you make an instant statement.”

The cropped trouser by Jen Holmes

“I always turn to a pair of classic cropped trousers to see me through tricky style situations. A tailored fit with straight or tapered legs in a neutral shade goes with almost everything in my wardrobe and can take me from desk to dance floor. For full fashion points, I wear mine with a loose shirt, kick-ass heels and a pop of eye-searing colour.”

The skinny jean by Kat Farmer

“There is nothing more prolific in my wardrobe than skinny jeans – there's a pair for every occasion. They’re easy to dress down with boots or wedged trainers, a loose tee and blazer – or dress up for the evening with heels, statement necklace and silky top. My jeans are the one perfect piece of clothing I couldn't be without.”
