In 1988, Kylie left acting behind to launch her music career. After first single The Locomotion rocketed to number one, Kylie travelled to England to work with legendary '80s pop producers Stock, Aitken & Waterman. The visit resulted in I Should Be So Lucky, which became an international number one hit. Kylie went on to churn out hit after hit throughout the late '80s - including the duet "Especially For You" with her Neighbours co-star Jason Donovan.

The 'girl next door' image would only last so long, and the 1990s saw Kylie in rebellious mode, starting with her Rythym of Love dance album. As this this shot of Kylie performing in Antwerp, Belgium illustrates, the frumpy sweaters and frizzy '80s hair were out, and the sex-kitten hair and leather was in.

A relationship with Michael Hutchence, the lead singer of INXS, continued Kylie's rebellion. Hutchence was quoted as saying that "corrupting Kylie" was his hobby, and that the INXS song Suicide Blonde was inspired by her. With songs like "Better the Devil You Know" and "Shocked", Kylie's new, sexually-aware persona may have been controversial, but the sales and reception of her new music showed that the world would adapt to the new Kylie.

Hutchence and Kylie dated until 1991, when Kylie discovered his affair with model Helena Christenson. Hutchence tragically passed away in 1997, leaving both the music world and Kylie shocked.

    Difficult times, 2006

In May of 2005 Kylie announced to her fans that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer, leaving the world in shock and her Showgirl - The Greatest Hits tour indefinitely postponed. Kylie underwent treatment in Melbourne, and the Australian and international press was sent in to a frenzy, camping outside of her family home, causing the Victorian Premier Steve Bracks to officially warn the international media that any disruption of the Minogue family's rights under Australian privacy laws would not be tolerated. Thankfully, Kylie made a full recovery, and finally put a rest to the "will she come back?" speculation by making her first public appearance in July 2005 at a children's hospital, and then again a much more publicised appearance at the Chanel Haute Couture show in July 2006 with her post-chemotherapy short blonde hair - Kylie was most definitely back.
