A huge announcement has been made in the case of Serial's Adnan Syed

Some of us might be invested in season two of Serial right now, or still in the throes of Steven Avery’s story in Making a Murderer, but we still remember our obsession with the case of Adnan Syed in Serial season one.

The case of the 1999 murder of Baltimore high-school student, Hae Min Lee formed the storyline of This American Life spin-off podcast, Serial.

Telling the story of Adnan Syed, (Lee's ex-boyfriend who is currently serving a life sentence after being convicted of her murder), host, Sarah Koenig, captivated listeners worldwide with her investigative story telling technique, as she discussed the potential biases in the prosecution case, and oversights by defence council.

When the podcast finished in December 2014, it had been downloaded 5 million times. Today, it has been downloaded 100 million times – making it the most successful podcast of all time - as people became gripped by the tale of Syed’s possible wrong conviction.

Now, the news has been announced that Syed, 35, will receive a post-conviction hearing – an enormous development in his case.

In an official statement by the Maryland Judiciary, it has been confirmed that Syed’s case will be heard on February 3, 4 and 5, when new evidence involving Syed’s alibi and cell phone towers, will be brought in front of a judge.

Asia McClain, with whom Syed claimed to be at the time of Hae Min lee’s murder, but was never brought to court by his defence lawyer, Crisitna Gutierrez, will be a key witness in the hearing.

The campaign to free Adnan, hope that this hearing might be the first step in the overturning of his conviction.

Close friend of Syed, Rabia Chaudry, has been tweeting about what the possible outcomes to this hearing could be, saying that if Syed wins, he could see a new trial or the high court could make a decision – unless, of course, he loses.

We’ll be keeping our ears to the ground on this one.
