Drop everything, sweetie: the first Absolutely Fabulous movie trailer is here

AbFab.jpg

They’re back – and more fabulous than ever.

The first trailer for Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie dropped today – and reveals the plot behind those photos of Kate Moss emerging from the Thames in a sequinned gown.

In the movie, Edina “Eddie” Monsoon (Jennifer Saunders) and Patsy Stone (Joanna Lumley) are determined to represent Kate Moss, who has just announced that she’s looking for a new PR company. But after Eddie accidentally knocks Kate into the Thames at a glitzy party – and she doesn’t resurface – the world’s most ludicrous fictional fashionistas are forced to go on the run from the police.

Of course, they flee to the south of France, where, as Eddie points out, “everyone’s a criminal”.

The trailer is packed with star cameos, from Mad Men actor Jon Hamm – who apparently once had a fling with Patsy – to Lily Cole, Stella McCartney, and Rebel Wilson. (Wilson plays an air stewardess who attempts to use a Taser on Patsy. Since Patsy is basically functionally immortal, having never met a bottle of vodka she didn’t neck or a Class A she didn’t snort, she barely flinches.) Joan Collins, Cara Delevigne, Emma Bunton, Lulu, Jean Paul Gaultier and Anya Hindmarch are among those also reported to appear in the full-length film.

Julia Sawalha makes a reappearance as Eddie’s long-suffering daughter Saffy, who now has a daughter herself.

Of course, the storyline and costumes are ridiculous. But beyond all the glitter, satire and slapstick, the trailer reminds us that, at its core, Ab Fab is a love story. Eddie and Patsy are as besotted with each other as ever, and it’s a joy to behold.

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie will be released in the UK on 1 July 2016. We cannot wait.
